What Is a Retail Tow? The Difference That Decides How You Get Paid
08 Sep 2026
Ask three tow operators what a retail tow is and you will get three answers. The definition matters more than it used to, because retail tows are now the ones that can earn a second payment through programs like the Pep Boys Tow Referral Program. Here is the working definition and why it should shape how you run the business.
The definition
A retail tow is a tow the customer orders and pays for directly. The vehicle owner, or someone acting for them, calls you, agrees a price with you, and pays you at drop-off. No third party dispatched the job, set the rate, or is paying the invoice.
That rules out the other three big buckets:
- Motor club and roadside network tows. Agero, Urgently, Honk, AAA and similar networks dispatch the job and pay you a negotiated per-call rate, usually weeks later. The customer typically pays nothing at the scene.
- Insurance tows. The insurer or its claims network orders and pays for the tow, often to a shop of its choosing.
- Police rotation, impound and private-property tows. A police department, municipality or property owner orders the tow. The vehicle owner pays release and storage fees later, but did not choose you and did not agree the rate.
Cash calls, credit-card calls, a shop calling on behalf of a customer who will pay you at the counter, a dealer paying you to bring in a trade-in: all retail.
Why the label matters
You set the price. On a retail tow, the rate is yours. On network work, it is theirs, and it is usually below your retail card.
You are paid at drop-off. Retail tows are paid same day. Network tows are paid in 15 to 45 days and carry a dispute process.
You choose the destination with the customer. This is the piece that unlocks referral revenue. A motor-club customer already has a destination agreement. A retail customer is asking you where the car should go. If the answer is a Pep Boys, any Pep Boys, the Pep Boys Tow Referral Program means Dolooma pays a referral bonus on top of the tow fee once the drop-off is logged in Dolooma within 48 hours and verified. The bonus starts at $20 per referral and rises with volume. Enrollment is free and there is no subscription requirement.
It builds a customer list. Retail customers can call you again and can leave you a Google review. Network customers remember the network, not you.
What does not qualify, and the edge cases
For referral purposes, a tow stops being retail the moment a motor club, insurer or roadside program is paying for it, because that customer already has a destination agreement. Two edge cases come up often:
- A shop calls you for its own customer. If the customer pays you the tow fee, it is retail. If the shop is paying you under a standing agreement, it is a commercial account, not retail, although the shop may still be a referral partner.
- A motor-club customer asks to go somewhere else and pays the difference. The tow was still dispatched and paid by the network. It is not retail.
How to do more retail tows
- Be findable. A complete Google Business Profile with recent reviews is where retail calls come from.
- Quote fast. Hook plus mileage in one sentence, with an ETA you can keep.
- Offer a destination. Many stranded customers do not know where to take the car. Recommending a nearby shop is a service, and when that shop is a Pep Boys it is also a bonus. Check the Pep Boys locations for your area.
- Log every drop-off within 48 hours. Store, plate or VIN and two photos in the Dolooma app, one of the vehicle in the lot with store signage and one close-up of a readable plate, are what turn a retail tow into a verified, invoiced, paid referral.
- Track the mix. Tag jobs by source. Most operators are surprised how much of their volume is already retail once they count.
Common questions
Is a cash call the same as a retail tow? Yes. Cash, card or invoice, if the customer is paying you directly it is retail.
Does a retail tow have to go to a shop? No. Home, storage, a dealer or a shop all count as retail. Only the referral bonus depends on the destination.
Can I do retail and motor-club work at the same time? Yes, and most operators do. The referral program has no exclusivity and runs alongside every other contract you hold.
